Mayo school pays poignant tribute to former pupil who died tragically

Vakaris Gudaitis RIP.

A Mayo secondary school has paid a poignant tribute to a former pupil who died tragically at the weekend.

Vakaris Gudaitis, 17, was killed after he was struck by a car on the N17 at Barnacarroll, Claremorris at approximately 9.20pm on Saturday night. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Vakaris was a former pupil at St Colman's College, Claremorris, and the school took to social media to express their sadness at the news.

“It was with deep sadness that we learned about past-pupil Vikaris Gudaitis (17) who was fatally injured on Saturday night last in a road traffic incident outside Claremorris.

“Originally from Lithuania, Vikaris and his family have lived in the south Mayo community for many years. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gudaitis family at this very difficult time. May Vikaris Rest in Peace.”

Mr Gudaitis' death comes just days after the death of a mother and her two daughters on the same stretch of road.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help the Gudaitis family pay for Vakaris' funeral costs.

Funeral arrangements are not available at this time.
