Ballina's commitment to autism inclusion and understanding recognised at national ceremony

Ballina celebrated taking home the New Community Recognition Award and the Sensory Accessibility Award at the AsIAm Autism Friendly Town awards at the Mansion House in Dublin last weekend.

Ballina took home two awards at the AsIAm Autism Friendly Town Awards held at the Mansion House in Dublin last Saturday.

The awards celebrate communities across Ireland that have demonstrated a strong commitment to fostering autism inclusion, understanding and acceptance and the efforts ongoing in Ballina to strive towards these commitments was recognized at the weekend’s award ceremony.

Ballina won the New Community Recognition Award and the Sensory Accessibility Award, joining a growing number of locations that have taken practical steps to make their spaces, businesses and services more accessible for autistic individuals and their families.

The event was attended by Lord Mayor of Dublin, Emma Blain, and AsIAm CEO & Founder, Adam Harris, who praised the achievements of the participating communities.

"An autism-friendly community is one that sees, understands, and values autistic people. We are proud to recognise Ballina for its commitment to fostering a more inclusive environment and for the steps it has taken to ensure that autistic individuals and their families can participate fully in everyday life,” said Mr Harris.

“These efforts set an example for other towns and cities across Ireland, and we look forward to continuing this journey together."

Elisha Beattie of Ballina Autism Friendly Town, said these awards will give the town greater momentum as they continue the great work they have carried out thus far.

"We are incredibly proud to receive this recognition for Ballina. Over the past 9 months, our community has worked together to create an environment that is welcoming and inclusive for autistic individuals,” said Ms Beattie.

“From increasing awareness and education to improving accessibility in public spaces and businesses, this achievement reflects the collective effort of so many people in Ballina. We look forward to continuing our work and building on this momentum."
