A Westport councillor has called on the management of Mayo County Council to reach a compromise with locals in Islandeady over the reinstatement of a wall that was removed during the construction of the N5 dual carriageway.
Cllr John O’Malley raised the issue with the council’s Head of Roads, Paul Dolan, at last week’s meeting of the Roads and Transportation Strategic Policy Committee. He believes the matter is not going to go away and has urged Mr Dolan and his team to find a resolution.
“It looks terrible and it isn’t fair,” he said. “The people are asking for 80 metres, but if you could put down 30 metres, they probably won’t appreciate me saying this, but it will do the job. If that could be done it would stop an awful lot of aggravation.”
Mr Dolan said his office has agreed to reconstruct the wall, but will only replace 15-20 metres.
“What we will replace is what we’re obliged to replace,” Mr Dolan said.
