The Banshees of Inisherin has led the way as the nominations for the 2023 Academy Awards have been announced this afternoon.

Martin McDonagh’s film, which was shot in Achill and Inis Mór, has received nine nominations.

It was nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Score and Best Film Editing while it was a clean sweep among its cast members.

Colin Farrell is up for Best Actor in a Leading Role alongside fellow Irishman Paul Mescal (Aftersun), while both Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan were nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Kerry Condon was included among the nominees for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Martin McDonagh, Kerry Condon, Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson were all nominated for Oscars.

McDonagh was also nominated for Best Director.

Meanwhile, The Quiet Girl (An Cailín Ciúin) became the first Irish-language film to be nominated for Best International Feature Film, while An Irish Goodbye was included in the Animated Short Film category.

The 95th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 12 live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
