There is shock and sadness throughout Achill this week at the tragic death of an elderly woman, whose car became submerged in water on New Year’s Eve.

Christiane Fries, who was a German national, resided on the island for many years.

Christiane was a committed, dedicated and much loved member of Achill Island RNLI team for a number of years and will be sadly missed by her many neighbours and friends in Sáile and throughout Achill.

Achill Island RNLI took to social media to pay tribute to Christiane.

“It is with much shock and sadness we record the recent sudden and tragic death of our former Fundraising Branch member, Christiane Fries.

“We offer our sincere condolences to her family and friends at this difficult time.

“Members of our Branch with her many other friends and acquaintances will assemble at the Mortuary at 11.15am to pay our last respects to a gentle and compassionate lady. May her kindly soul rest in peace.”

Christiane remains will leave the Mortuary at Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar tomorrow (Friday) at 11.30am for a private cremation ceremony in Cavan.
