Parking will be free during certain hours of the day in Ballina in the lead-up to Christmas to encourage shopping in the town.

Head of the Ballina Municipal District, Declan Turnbull revealed that they plan to follow traditional measure by having free parking from 2pm to 6.30pm in council-owned car parks. This will exclude street-side parking in order to keep traffic flowing.

It will be in place from Monday, December 5 until Saturday, December 31.

Fianna Fáil councillor Annie May Reape proposed that they adopt these measures, which was seconded by Cllr Seamus Weir.

Cllr Reape also requested that they put up temporary signage to inform people, with Bachelors Walk and the Arts Centre being made a priority. She also wants signs on the metres at the designated car parks.

Mr Turnbull said they would look into installing the signage and he also confirmed that Sunday, December 4, will be date for the turning on of the Christmas Lights, which is subject to change.
