Gardaí have confirmed that the body of a man, aged in his 70s, was recovered from the Garavogue River in Sligo town.

Gardaí and emergency services responded to reports of the discovery of the body yesterday evening at Ballast Quay in the town.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to Sligo University Hospital where a post mortem will be carried out in due course.

A file will now be prepared for the Coroner.
