More than 100 divers descended on North Mayo’s coastline for a bumper weekend of watersports.

The Western Dive Rally brought 120 divers from all over Ireland to the Mayo coastline for a weekend of dipping and diving in the picturesque surrounds of Kilcummin with divers also taking to the waters around Downpatrick Head, Ballycastle and Killala Bay.

Cllr Michael Loftus, a member of the Grainne Uaile Sub Aqua Club, which hosted the event, said the weather was kind to the divers over the weekend.

“The good weather made it a success. The weather was great on Friday and it allowed a shore dive out from Kilcummin Pier. On Saturday there were westerly winds that gave us shelter and allowed us to dive out by Kilcummin Head.”

“There were nine boats out in total and they would come back in and go back out full at 9.30am, 2.30pm and 6pm, which gives you an idea of how much a success it was.

“Sunday gave us the best weather of the weekend. We had one dive and that was out to the Thames, which is a famous wreck. We had out four boats out diving and three others went down to Downpatrick Head.”

He added that the Grainne Uaile Sub Aqua Club received “nothing but compliments” for their hosting of the event
