Locals in Straide will hold a public meeting tonight (Wednesday) to discuss the ongoing controversy over the loss of the village’s parish priest.

St Peter and Paul Church, Straide.

There was huge shock when parishioners were told on July 10 that they were losing PP Fr Martin Convey to Cooloney in Co Sligo, and due to the impact of decreasing vocations to the priesthood, there would be no permanent replacement. Instead Bohola PP Fr Stephen O’Mahony will provide cover.

A meeting took place with Bishop of Achonry Paul Dempsey on Thursday last where parishioners voiced their dissatisfaction with the decision. The parish priest of Swinford, Fr Dermot Meehan, also attended.

The meeting with Bishop Dempsey came as a result of a public meeting in Straide last month at which proposals were made to rectify the situation. A number of locals asked why a priest from another country could not be appointed, as a number of foreign priests have come into parishes like Castlebar, Westport and Tuam, and it has ‘worked very well’.

Tomorrow’s meeting will take place at 9pm at St Peter and Paul Church, Straide. All parishioners are invited to attend.
