The annual Geesala Festival will take place from Sunday, August 7th to Sunday, August 14th next.

Racing on the strand of Doolough as part of the Geesala races.

The annual festival is famous for its horse racing and 2022 is no exception, with the festival centering around a series of great events.

The festivities kick off on Sunday, 7th August with Traditional Heritage and Sports Day, which will include traditional music, song and dance and arts and crafts.

Monday sees Girls and Boys soccer, the One Mile Race and live music in local venues the High Chaparral and Erris Coast Hotel.

On Tuesday the events include Deep Sea Angling and Festival’s Fittest Family. Wednesday is a midweek break from activities to give visitors a chance to enjoy the natural beauty of the locality.

Live music in both local venues is set for every night of the festival. The 10K Race is on Thursday, and on Friday the Boat Racing Regatta takes to the sea.

An action-packed Saturday sees an Open Golf Competition with Greyhound Racing and Horse Racing on the beach. With the grand finale on Sunday promising fun and craic with Horse Racing, Best Dressed Ladies and Gents, Arm Wrestling Tournament and Children’s Entertainment.

The first Geesala festival took place in 1993 to raise funds for the local community centre but due to its popularity the Geesala festival became an annual event, changing the following year to an “Emigrant Reunion” festival, with committee members from the seven neighbouring villages sending letters to emigrants from those villages inviting them back to celebrate the festival.

While this year’s festival is unfortunately without the annual Horse Show, due to the problems associated with obtaining insurance for such events, the organisers are determined, non the less, to ensure that an enjoyable and memorable takes place this year in Geesala fore the first time since 2019.
