Sligo Rovers suffered a heavy defeat away in Norway in this evening’s UEFA Europa Conference League round three qualifying first leg.

Ballina native David Cawley converted spot-kick on the 89th minute was the only bright spark as the Bit O’Red lost 5-1 to Viking FK.

It was a tough night for John Russell’s side as they found themselves 2-0 down after eight minutes and they suffered injuries to Adam McDonnell and Garry Buckley midway through the first half.

Zlatko Tripic, Samuel Kari Fridjonsson, Mai Traore, Niklas Sandberg and Advin Austbo all found the net for the home side.

Viking will come to The Showgrounds on Thursday next and barring a miracle, Rovers’ European dream looks to be over.

Kick-off is at 7pm.
