A Ballina area councillor has said she is “embarrassed” every time she drives along a particularly dangerous bend in the area.

Fianna Fáil councillor Annie May Reape has asked Mayo County Council to proceed with works under the Local Improvement Scheme to remove the bend in question, located at Farrangarode, Quay Rd.

“We need engagement with the landowner to see what can be done here,” she said. “I am embarrassed to see this bend, how dangerous it is, every time I drive out past it. There have been several accidents and a number of fatalities at this location down through the years.”

She said that a commitment had been given previously to carry out the works under the Community Involvement Scheme, but these were never carried out.

Fine Gael councillor John O’Hara warned that there would be fatalities if something wasn’t done, while Independent councillor Seamus Weir also supported the motion.

“This is a dangerous spot, why don’t we do the right thing and remove the bend?” he said.
