Warm tributes have been paid to a senior engineer who is set to retire from Mayo Co Council.
Ann Sweeney, Senior Roads Engineer with Castlebar Municipal District, is to retire shortly after giving more than 20 years of dedicated service to the local authority.
Castlebar councillors spoke in glowing terms about the departing engineer.
“No words can express my gratitude for what she has done for Castlebar for 25 years,” said Fianna Fáil councillor Al McDonnell. “She is a colossus.”
Cllr McDonnell praised Ms Sweeney’s work-rate and efficiency and said she will be deeply missed by the communities she has worked with over the years.
“Communities are deeply upset that she is departing,” the long-serving Fianna Fáil councillor said.
Independent Cllr Michael Kilcoyne joined in the plaudits.
“Everyone in the community knows Ann Sweeney. Everyone knows the work she had done for them. She is going to be very hard to replace.”
Fianna Fáil’s Blackie Gavin praised Ms Sweeney’s exemplary track record.
“No other engineer has done what you have done,” he remarked.
“The work you have done for communities is second to none and will not be forgotten.”
The council’s Director of Services for Castlebar John Condon said it was the end of an era.
Ms Sweeney thanked her colleagues, team, and councillors for their support over the years. She gave a special word of thanks to all the communities she has worked with during her career.
