“Lough Lannagh is an experience and that would add to the experience of Lough Lannagh,” Cllr Deere stated.

The Fine Gael councillor said the lakeside walk had been a ‘lifeline’ for people during the Covid-19 lockdowns in 2020 and 2021, and continues to be hugely popular.

He said Castlebar Municipal District should seek to amend the by-laws if it s required.

“We can re-evaluate the casual trading by-laws in this light,” said Town Manager, Iarla Moran. However, he warned that this can be a lengthy process.

“There is a whole statutory process to go through,” Mr Moran explained.

Meanwhile, a number of signage issues in the town were raised at the meeting.

Cllr Deere said Gallows Hill, which he described as “one of the most historic areas” of the town, has been without proper signage for some considerable time.

He said a lack of signage on the Castlebar urban greenway continues to confuse tourists as they pass through a car parking area.
