The Mayo Mountain Rescue Team were tasked by the National Ambulance Service on Monday afternoon to assist a climber suffering from fatigue at Croagh Patrick.

They were alerted to the 78-year-old man, who had several falls near the summit, shortly before 2pm, according to Midwest Radio.

Other climbers assisted him down to the shoulder of the mountain, where he was assessed by the First Response team from Mayo MRT.

Due to his condition and the presence of some injuries, the rescue helicopter R118 from Sligo came to assist and the man was safely airlifted to Mayo University Hospital.

The team were stood down at 4pm.
