A ban on swimming that was put in force at a Mayo beach earlier this week has been lifted.

Swimming at the Point in Westport was prohibited by Mayo County Council due to excessive levels of bacteria in the water.

Following extensive testing from the council, the bacteria has been reduced and the water quality have improved.

Mayo County Council posted the update on social media: “Please be advised that, following testing, bacteria levels have reduced and the water quality has improved at the POINT in Westport, therefore the DO NOT SWIM NOTICE is no longer in effect”.
