Westport was announced as a runner-up in the Digital Business category at the second annual .IE Digital Town Awards 2022.

The result was announced yesterday at a virtual awards ceremony attended by Minister Damien English.

The .IE Digital Town Awards were established in 2021 by .IE, the managers of Ireland’s online .ie address and recognise local town and community projects and the people that are using digital innovation, technologies, and digital-first thinking for the betterment of towns, citizens, and services in the community.

As runner-up in the Digital Business category, Westport’s ‘Where no Westport business gets left behind’ won a total prize of €5,000 in recognition for working closely with a new e-commerce platform designed to support local business and connect communities.

Westport-based Cllr Peter Flynn congratulated all involved in a social media post.

“Congrats to Westport Chamber of Commerce who won second prize (€5,000) today in the Business Category National Digital Towns Awards.

“A particular mention to Westport man James Flanagan who is based in Australia who designed the e-commerce platform HoverIT which allows every business in Westport to generate a connected online presence.

“Well done to all involved,” Cllr Flynn wrote.

Elsewhere, Roscommon town’s project Roscommon Rapid Response Team won the Digital Changemaker category, securing €8,500 in funding, while Sligo town secured the Digital Education Award for Online Learning Project Manager with a prize of €9,000.
