On Thursday, Ballyhaunis boxers Carlagh Peake, Elizabeth Lloyd and Shauna Keaveney travelled to Borås in Sweden to take part in the Golden Girl Box Cup.
This is the largest all-female competition in Europe and is a hugely competitive tournament.
Elizabeth Lloyd and Shauna Keaveney both bowed out following defeats to Ukrainian boxers on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
On Saturday morning, Carlagh Peake faced Ukraine and left nothing to the judges’ scorecards. Peake delivered a powerful right hand and gave the Ukrainian a standing count in the second round securing the win.
Peake faced Italy the following morning.
“We were worried if I’m honest sending Carlagh into the ring, we had watched the Italian the night before in her bout and she was extremely strong and durable at the weight” explained Martin Peake, Carlagh’s father and coach.
Peake dug deep for all three rounds and used her boxing skill to out manoeuvre the Italian and secure the gold medal.
She is the only female from Connacht to return with a gold medal and her coaches Martin Peake, Sue Peake, Vinnie Moran, Peter Maughan and Bernie Clark are extremely proud of her and indeed her teammates.
