The first ever Achill Island Film Festival will run from the May 20-22, bringing a taste of Hollywood to Mayo. The film festival will include film premieres, screenings and panel discussions with movie producers, crew and cast members.
“Working with the community, Achill Island Film Festival will be a small and friendly festival,” Emily O’Callaghan, Festival Director said.
“Attendees are encouraged to enjoy the local world-class beaches, pubs and food in between screenings. The festival will include special events, workshops, premiere screenings, discussions and something for everyone to enjoy.”
The Achill Island Film Festival will show screenings of indie, alternative and some of the best quality films from Ireland and international studios. Screenings will be shown in indoor and outdoor venues across Achill.
The festival will include exclusive films, fascinating documentaries, and films set during the pandemic. As well as panel discussions and live Q&As, there will also be live traditional Irish music performances. The festival organisers received 200 submissions from 17 countries including Iran, Egypt and Iceland to name a few.
Achill was the spot of two recent Hollywood productions in 2021 including ‘My Sailor, My Love’ and ‘Banshees of Inisherin’ staring Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan.
Emily O’Callaghan explained that her long-term goal is for the Achill Film Festival to be an annual event. The festival is being supported by Fáilte Ireland and runs from Friday May 20 until Sunday May 22. Tickets are available on Eventbrite.
