A local councillor has called on members of the public to apply for the Affordable Housing Scheme.

Westport-based Fine Gael councillor Peter Flynn has urged people to apply for the first scheme that Mayo County Council has undertaken since 2009.

“Following a directive of all 30 councillors at a recent meeting the Council are undertaking a survey to gauge the level of interest in Affordable Housing in the county.

“The survey takes 60 seconds to complete and is very straight forward. I would urge any individual or family living in Mayo earning €26,000 – €80,000 to complete the survey. In my view these are the forgotten people who are either still living with their parents or paying exorbitant rents often in locations away from family and work places.

“This survey in itself won’t deliver affordable housing but if we don’t have hard data to back up our assertions, then the Housing Executive will simply say there is no demand and continue building large estates solely for social housing,” Mr Flynn said.
