President Michael D Higgins will be in Sligo today to address the SIPTU Biennial National Delegate conference.

President Higgins will tell delegates that, following two brutal years of the Covid-19 pandemic – which have had such devastating consequences – we owe it to the victims of the pandemic, and those who risked their own health working in frontline and essential services, not to shirk the opportunity that now presents itself to reflect, take stock and learn the lessons that the pandemic provoked for us.

President Higgins will say that experiencing the pandemic has informed a heightened recognition across society regarding issues such as work-life balance, employer flexibility, remote working and the need to value our essential and frontline workers who have been undervalued and in some instances underpaid for so long.

The SIPTU conference continues at the Clayton Hotel in Sligo until Thursday, and will discuss issues such as the cost of living and pay increases.
