Independent Cllr Christy Hyland is furious that Mayo Co Council spent money allocated for the Clew Bay Greenway on projects in other parts of the county.

Cllr Hyland expressed his anger with the council executive at a meeting last Friday and claimed they knew the funding was withdrawn but they never told the relevant people.

“I walked twice with people from the community along sections of the greenway and it was known months prior that the funding was gone. There is no excuse for that,” Cllr Hyland said.

Director of Services Joanne Grehan confirmed that the funding was spent on Moore Hall, and a number of small projects across the county including the Achill greenway, Keel Caravan Park in Achill, Wild Atlantic Way remedial works, and more remedial works in greenways across.

“Who sanctioned that funding allocated for the greenway from Westport to Louisburgh was spent in Moore Hall?” asked Hyland. “This is public money and that money was allocated to that area and that funding was spent on another project. Who sanctioned that?”

Cathaoirleach Michael Smyth stepped in and told Cllr Hyland that he was not going to get any names and that he did not understand why the independent councillor was asking the question.

Cllr Hyland said he had no problem with funding being spent in other parts of Mayo, but he feels that the funding allocated to his area was “hijacked”.
