The runners take off at the start of the 2019 West of Ireland Women’s Mini-Marathon at the Mall in Castlebar. The event will take place in-person once again on Sunday, May 1, 2022.

Guess what’s coming home to Mayo this May Bank Holiday weekend?

Having been held in the virtual space for the last two years due to Covid-19 restrictions, the Western People West of Ireland Women’s Mini-Marathon will return to its rightful home along the Mall in Castlebar, live and in-person, this May Bank Holiday Sunday (May 1). The Mini-Marathon is once against being held in partnership with Mayo.ie and the Mayo Sports Partnership.

The pandemic forced the Mini-Marathon, like so much else in our lives, to adapt and make the best of the circumstances in 2020 and 2021 and while the reaction and engagement with the virtual Mini-Marathons in both years were incredible, with girls and women taking part all over the world, nothing could quite replace the thrill of gathering together and lining up at the start line in Castlebar for the real thing.

The organizers have missed the in-person element of the Mini-Marathon every bit as much as the participants and they are looking forward to seeing each and every one of this year’s runners, joggers and walkers on May 1.

This year’s Mini-Marathon will once again take place in conjunction with Mayo Day (Saturday, April 30, 2022) and will be a celebration of all that makes Mayo unique. This year’s festivities will have an added air of celebration after the difficulties of the last couple of years and organizers are keen to invite as many people #HomeToMayo as possible to join in the fun.

Charlie Lambert, Head of the Mayo Sports Partnership, said: “All of us in Mayo Sports Partnership are really looking forward to reconnecting with participants, spectators and partners from all across the country and beyond on May 1.

Participants in the ever-popular ‘Mini-Mini’ warm up before their race.

“The Primary Schools 2K Fun Run involving children and families is also something we are all eagerly anticipating, it should be a great day out!”

The 2022 West of Ireland Women’s Mini-Marathon will be officially launched in the coming weeks and more information about how to sign up, how to support your preferred charity, training plans, interviews with famous past participants, and much more besides will be available in the Western People and across the Mayo.ie and Sports Partnerships online channels in the coming weeks.

The countdown to the 2022 Mini-Marathon starts now!
