The N5 road between Swinford and Charlestown has re-opened to traffic.

It was closed since early this morning following a serious road collision shortly after midnight last night, which resulted in three people being hospitalised.

At approximately 12.25am this morning, a car and a HGV truck collided on the road between Charlestown and Swinford.

Two occupants of the car were seriously injured during the collision.

A man (70s), a passenger, was taken to Mayo University Hospital where his condition is described as critical.

A woman passenger (50s) was transferred to Beaumont Hospital where her condition is described as serious.

The driver of the car was transferred to Mayo University Hospital with what were described as “serious, but non-life threatening injuries”.

A Garda technical examination of the scene has taken place.

Anyone travelling on the N5 between Charlestown and Swinford last night between midnight and 1.00am and who may have camera (including dash cam) footage, is asked to make it available to the Gardaí.
