A new group to promote tourism in East and South Mayo is being proposed.

It has been reported that Foxford-based Mayo Co councillor Neil Cruise will bring the notice of motion before a Claremorris/Swinford Municipal District meeting next week.

Cllr Cruise is asking his fellow councillors and management of the municipal district to investigate and consider the possibility of setting up a body to be called Mayo South East Tourism.

The body will market the tourism potential of the Claremorris/Swinford area. The primary aim of the initiative will be to attract more tourists into the area.

It will be charged with bringing together elected members and management of the district; tourism activity providers, existing tourism destinations, hotel and accommodation representatives, a representative of Fáilte Ireland, a representative of the council’s capital tourism unit and others as a steering group for Mayo South East Tourism.

The group will then work with all relevant bodies such as – Mayo Co Council’s capital tourism unit, tourism interests within the county, Fáilte Ireland and relevant government tourism departments to attract visitors to the area.
