A Ballina area councillor has expressed his thanks to everyone who helped him following an accident he had while in Chicago recently.
Councillor Michael Loftus was struck by a vehicle in the vicinity of Gaelic Park in the Windy City in December where he was visiting as part of a Mayo County Council delegation attending a series of Mayo Association Chicago events. He sustained shoulder injuries and underwent surgery at Palos Hospital, Chicago.
At last week’s meeting of Mayo Co Co, the Crossmolina native expressed his gratitude to all who helped him.
“I want to thank all of the people who were very supportive of me during this time. I have to give great praise to the Mayo Association Chicago, it is amazing how the best of people come out and help when you need them.”
He expressed particular gratitude to Cllr Gerry Coyle and his family, many of whom live in Chicago and said he was “forever in their debt.”
“There was a moment at the airport before we came home where Gerry tied the lace of my shoe for me and I only wished I had my camera out. It is not often you see a Fine Gael councillor tying the shoes of a Fianna Fail councillor,” Cllr Loftus joked.
