Cllr Neil Cruise put forward a motion at last week’s meeting of Mayo County Council seeking support to name the new bridge crossing the River Moy at Cloongullane, the “Michael Davitt Bridge.”

Cllr Cruise said it would be important to honour the memory of and give proper recognition to one of Mayo’s “greatest sons.”

“It is past time that Mayo Co Co develop the Michael Davitt theme further. It is bigger than Straide, it is bigger than Mayo and Ireland even. It is an international theme and naming the bridge would be a nice start to this process.”

He was advised that the Council would need to go through the proper procedures for the naming of infrastructure and landmarks before this move would be possible.
