Former RTE journalist Charlie Bird has announced that he will climb Croagh Patrick on March 26, 2022 to raise awareness around motor neurone disease.

Charlie vowed to climb the Mayo mountain to highlight the disease as he battles the condition himself.

He tweeted that the date of the climb will be Saturday, March 26 with an announcement about the climb coming next week from Pieta House and The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association, the two charities who will benefit from the climb.

He added: “All the relevant people in Mayo have come on board. They are going to give us a big Mayo welcome!”

He is expected to have some good company on his journey up the Reek. Country music superstar Daniel O’Donnell said he would Charlie in climbing Croagh Patrick and so too did cervical cancer campaigner Vicky Phelan.
