The ninth annual Belleek 10k was hosted by Ballina Athletics Club at Belleek Woods over the weekend. It marked a welcome return for the popular North Mayo race, which was forced into cancellation by Covid in 2020.

Moy Valley runner Luke Johnston was in top form in Belleek on Sunday.

207 runners competed in this year’s event. There was an excellent turnout from a number of local clubs while clubs from Sligo, Leitrim and Roscommon were also well represented.

The showers and rain clouds that had circled Ballina pre-race disappeared just in time and the race was held in brilliant sunshine. The men’s race was won by Luke Johnson of Moy Valley AC, who set a new course record in a blistering 32.17, beating the previous record of 32:29 set by Brendan Conway of Westport in 2019.

Men: 1, Luke Johnston (Moy Valley AC) 32.17; 2, Seamus Somers (Sligo AC) 32:51; 3, Dessie Burke (Ballina AC) 33:17.
Women: 1, Eimear O’Brien (Sligo AC) 37:02; 2, Fiona Kelly (Ballina AC) 42:21; 3,Caroline Coulter (Tireragh AC) 42:24.
