A Mayo athletics track that will play host to thousands of athletes over the coming years is nearing completion.
Lake District Athletic Club, based in Ballinrobe, are delighted with the progress of their new 200m running track, which is currently being constructed in The Green. It is expected the project will be finished in September.
It will also include six sprint lanes, a long jump pit, high jump and a throws area.
The Green area of the town, located beside the River Robe, is already home to the local rugby and soccer clubs, an astroturf facility and playground. The track will conclude the final part of development at this location.
The club were fortunate to be awarded grant aid from the Sports Capital Programme to begin the project but the total cost will far exceed the grant amount. A lot of the planned fundraising events last year were derailed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This had not deterred the hardworking committee who this weekend will host their first fundraiser, proceeds from which will go towards the project.
The group are hosting a clothes collection on Friday and Saturday, July 23 and 24. The collection point is the Parish Centre, from 10am to 12 noon and 4pm to 6pm on Friday and from 10am to 12 noon and 5pm to 7pm on Saturday. You are invited to gather declutter your drawers and wardrobes and gather up those old uniforms and clothes and raise money for the new track.
With over 200 athletes registered and international athletes such as Conor Cusack, who competed for Ireland in the recent European Under 20 championships in the javelin and Sarah Quinn, who won a silver medal with the 4X200m Irish relay team at the World Relay championships in the area, the facility is guaranteed to be put to good use!
Watch out for further fundraising events by the group over the coming months as they continue with their plans to install lighting, etc to conclude this wonderful addition to the South Mayo area.
