The hard work and dedication of volunteers in a South Mayo town was vandalised over the past weekend.
The Community Garden which is located on the grounds of St Mary’s Church in the heart of Ballinrobe is a labour of love for many residents of the town. The garden has a seated area as well as a greenhouse that grows vegetables and flowers while the garden itself also has various raised flower beds which bring colour to the beautifully decorated area.
Over the past weekend, vandals once again destroyed parts of the garden, burning holes in the covering of the greenhouse as well as uprooting plants and flowers and some of the vegetables which were being grown inside.
This is the second time the Community Garden has been vandalised. In early April, some of the panels of a timber area that leads into the seated area were broken and strewn across the garden.
In a show of community spirit, a local resident gave of his time to fix the fencing and bring it back to its former glory.
Of this weekend’s destruction, Tacú Family Resource Centre, who oversee the upkeep of the garden said: “We were so sad to go to our Community Garden to be greeted with such destruction. Everyone involved in the garden is committed to making sure there is an inclusive safe space for all the community. We are asking everyone to please respect this space and if you see any anti-social behaviour alert us in the centre.”
