Applications for the 2021 Shopfront Grant Scheme can now be made to Mayo Co Council by businesses in the Castlebar Municipal District.

Castlebar town is among the areas where supports to improve the overall visual appearance of shopfronts is available.

The scheme is focused on improving the overall visual appearance of shopfronts in the county town and surrounding villages.

The works covered for funding include the repair and renovation of shopfronts, signage, repair of existing masonry, and other works related to the exterior of buildings.

It extends to shopfronts along the main streets in Castlebar as well as in villages such as Belcarra, Balla, and Turlough. Grant funding of up to 50% of the cost of the approved works to a maximum of €1,000 is available to the successful applicant.

The scheme was launched following a proposal from Fine Gael Cllr, Donna Sheridan, who welcomed the implementation of the initiative.

“The theory behind this motion came from seeing how hard it is for some of the smaller, local businesses across the municipal district. We need to ensure we support these businesses as they reopen.”

Cllr Michael Kilcoyne welcomed the news of the scheme but admitted it was “only a start”.

“A business person said to me recently that there is little point doing up their shop front when there’s a derelict building falling apart beside them,” the Independent councillor remarked. “I’m disappointed in the lack of real action with our derelict sites. I propose the matter is given priority and is on the agenda each month.”
