A Westport councillor has said the current Level 5 restrictions to curb the spread of Covid-19 is preventing families from erecting headstones over the graves of their loved ones.
Cllr Peter Flynn made his remarks at last week’s meeting of Mayo Co Council’s Environmental Strategic Policy Committee, explaining that he has received a number of representations from constituents who are upset at being unable to erect headstones since the Level 5 restrictions were re-introduced in late December.
He said it has already been an upsetting year for people who have lost loved ones and this was only making their situation more upsetting.
The head of the county council’s environment section Martin Keating said there were some exemptions for construction works under level 5, but not for the erection of headstones.
Cllr Flynn asked that correspondence be sent to the relevant national body requesting that this activity be considered essential construction work.
