The Covid-19 vaccination centre located at Breaffy House Hotel is expected to begin its operations for the rollout of the vaccine around the middle of March.
However, this is dependent on the availability of the vaccine. Ireland expects to have received a total of 1.1 million doses of the three approved vaccines, Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca by the end of March.
A meeting of the Regional Health Forum West was this week told by Saolta CEO Tony Canavan that the vaccination site in Breaffy, Castlebar is currently undergoing a fit-out, including the installation of all necessary IT systems, to prepare it for the work ahead. This work is expected to be completed at the end of the first week in March.
Following this, the vaccination team is to move into the venue.
Other satellite sites for smaller vaccination centres are under consideration, including in the west Mayo area, with the aim of vaccinating priority groups as required.
Mr Canavan was responding to a query from Cllr Martin McLoughlin, who said “it was music to people’s ears” that the vaccination plans are progressing.
