There are over 1,000 children aged 12 and under awaiting an initial appointment for Speech and Language Assessment following a referral in the Community Healthcare Organisation 2, which comprises Mayo, Galway and Roscommon.

A backlog has accumulated in recent times due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
At last week’s Regional Health Forum Breda Crehan-Roche, Chief Officer with Community Healthcare West said that many Speech and Language Therapists had been assigned to Covid-19 test centres due to their medical knowledge.
She added there were plans in place over the next few months to address this backlog as Speech and Language Therapists return to work.
