Met Eireann has this afternoon issued a weather warning to take place with immediate effect.

Since midday, Mayo is one of seven counties to whom a Status Yellow snow/ice warning has been applied.

The national weather forecaster has said to expect falls of hail, sleet and snow, leading to icy and hazardous conditions.

Met Eireann has put the warning in place until 12pm on Saturday, with the alert also applying to Sligo, Roscommon, Leitrim, Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan.

Temperatures will be as low as minus 4 degrees on Friday night and Met Éireann says there is a “growing possibility” of snow both on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

The forecaster said most of the country will see snow on Saturday night and there is possibility of more snow on Sunday morning.

Sunday will be another cold day with frost forming on Sunday night. All indications suggest a return to milder weather next week.
