A planning application providing for a major upgrade of the Tesco supermarket on Market Road in Ballina is expected to be lodged within the next few months.
In October 2019 Tesco Ireland Ltd confirmed that, following many years of inaction on a previously approved €15m proposal to develop a state-of-the-art new supermarket in Market Square in Ballina, it planned to engage in discussions with Mayo Co Council to significantly enhance the interior and exterior of its existing store instead.
Local TD Deputy Dara Calleary has been keeping tabs on the progress of the eagerly awaited development, which is geared at vastly improving the appearance and experience of the the Ballina store, and has been advised this morning, Monday, January 18, that Tesco plans to proceed with a planning application imminently.
The company said in a statement: “We’re continuing our engagement with Mayo County Council as part of the pre-planning process. We’re making good progress towards submitting a planning application end Q1/start Q2, Covid permitting. ”
Deputy Calleary has welcomed the update, saying the project, together with Ballina’s planned military barracks development , will see a complete rejuvenation of the Market Square area in time for Ballina’s 300th anniversary celebrations in 2023.
