Staff and residents from St Augustine’s Community Nursing Unit in Ballina, and Merlin Park Community Nursing Unit, Galway were the first HSE Older People’s Services facilities in Mayo and Galway to receive the Covid-19 vaccine.

The HSE has shared a moving video message from staff and residents about the impact of the vaccine and how the Covid-19 situation has changed their lives.

St Augustine’s suffered a Covid-19 outbreak earlier this year. “A few of us were left standing, most of the staff were gone. Most of the residents got it. It was just like devastation, a battle zone, and we ran on adrenaline all the time,” recalled Noreen Quinn, a member of the nursing staff at St Augustine’s.

We might have our visitors coming back in again to see us and that means a big lot,” said 91-year old Agnes Bourke. The Crossmolina native and St Augustine’s resident was the first nursing home resident in the county to receive the vaccine.
