Castlebar area county councillor Michael Kilcoyne has written to Tony Canavan, the Chief Executive Officer of the Saolta Hospital Group to ask about a potential outbreak of Covid-19 at Mayo University Hospital (MUH).

Cllr Kilcoyne said it is his understanding that there has been a new outbreak of Covid-19 at the facility in the last number of days with a number of patients and between 10-15 members of staff diagnosed with the virus.

He asked if the above had occurred and if so, what steps Saolta was taking to deal with the matter.

Saolta manages MUH and six other hospitals in the west of Ireland.

The latest HSE Daily Operations Report showed there were 19 cases of Covid-19 on-site at MUH up to 8pm last night. This marked a sharp rise from the figure of nine, recorded two days prior on St Stephen’s Day.
