A man has appeared before Castlebar District Court this morning having been extradited from America overnight.
Frank Carr, Tourmakeady was extradited from America where he had resided for some time and was arrested at Dublin Airport on foot of an arrest warrant. He was later charged with dangerous driving causing the deaths of Sean Halloran (20) and Orla O’Malley (18) at Churchfield, Tourmakeady on June 4, 2017.
Sgt Margaret O’Connor gave evidence of serving the Book of Evidence on Carr.
State Solicitor Vincent Deane said the DPP directed trial on indictment. He requested Carr be sent forward for trial to Castlebar Circuit Court on Tuesday, January 26 next.
Defending solicitor Tom Walsh informed the court his client had instructed him not to make an application for bail at this stage.
Making an application for legal aid, Mr Walsh said he had no time to complete an application form as Carr had just been extradited this morning.
He noted Carr had been in the hands of the American authorities for some time. He was a young man who is unemployed.
Judge Fiona Lydon noted Carr had no income or assets in this state and granted legal aid.
After giving Carr the alibi warning, she remanded him in custody to appear at Castlebar Circuit Court on January 26 next.
