Following public pressure action is to be taken to prevent raw sewage from flowing into a Castlebar housing estate.

Lakeshore Drive residents have had to put up with raw sewage overflowing from a manhole when there is heavy rainfall in the area.

The issue was highlighted by local councillors Ger Deere and Michael Kilcoyne. Irish Water has now resolved to carry out works on the network which involves fixing defects on the downstream sewer that are believed to be causing blockages and reducing capacity in the network.

Survey works are ongoing with the final section of the sewer due to be completed in the coming weeks. Irish Water will then scope works to repair the defects in the first quarter of 2021
