Oweninny wind farm

A Ballina Municipal District councillor is urging that all funds to be distributed for the purposes of community benefit in association with the Oweninny Wind Farm should be administered by the existing Oweninny Community Benefit Fund board.

Cllr Michael Loftus has expressed concern at the fact that the developers of the windfarm — a company comprised of interests from Bord na Móna and ESB — are contemplating appointing a separate board to administer a second tranche of community benefit monies that will be available on completion of the second stage of the wind farm in the Bellacorrick area.

The additional funding, which will amount to approximately €300,000 per year, is the result of a new Government levy, he explained.

“I personally think it is wrong to appoint a new board. There is already a board in place that is well capable of dealing with this. We have a structure in place that is working,” said Cllr Loftus, adding that Mayo Co Council has indicated that the existing board is available and willing to administer the additional funding.
