The Ballyhaunis to Ballinlough Road will remain closed until lunchtime today after a 19-year-old man lost his life in a single-vehicle accident last night.
The deceased, who has not been named yet but is understood to be from the East Mayo area, died when the car he was a passenger in hit a tree at Cloonafarna, close to the Roscommon border shortly before 11pm.
Gardaí understand the car was travelling towards Ballinlough when the accident occurred.
The driver of the car, a 21-year-old man, was taken to Mayo University Hospital but his injuries are not believed to be serious.
A family liaison officer is communicating with the deceased’s family and an incident room has been set up at Claremorris Garda Station.
Forensic collision investigators are at the scene this morning and gardaí say the road will not be open until lunchtime at the earliest.
Investigating officers are appealing to anyone who travelled along the N60 between 10:30pm and 11:15pm last night to check for video footage (including dashcam) and make it available to them.
Anyone with information should contact Gardaí in Claremorris on 094-93-72080 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
