Forget about the usual 10k runs or marathons Ballyhaunis Community Council is hosting a Walk to New York.
Ballyhaunis people around the globe are invited to sign up for the virtual fundraiser, which is running to October 3, to help refurbish the community hall
Committee member Alma Gallagher explained that participants will take a snapshot of their distances covered and daily tallies will be posted online with a target of almost 5,000km over the two week period.
“The fundraisers we had planned for the year had to be shelved because of Covid-19. Virtual fundraisers have taken off and a lot of Ballyhaunis people are based in New York so there is a great connection there and we felt the distance is very doable if we get enough people to take part.”
The initiative has caught the attention of locals with the GAA club, golfers, members of the Fit4Life and Parent and Toddler groups among those who have signed up.
“Everyone in the community has used the hall in some way maybe even as a fundraising venue for the clubs they are involved in. People realise the important role of the hall in Ballyhaunis; there’s a story or a memory there for everyone.”
The committee hopes to raise €5,000 from the initiative with a total of €135,000 in local funds needed to match grant applications.
