A Crossmolina community has rallied around a local family struck by illness to make their dream come true.

Local woman Tracey Flynn – the only child of Kathleen and Peter Flynn – married her fiancé Mark Stewart in her homeplace of Abbeytown/Abbeyview last Saturday, September 19.

The nuptials took place a whole year earlier than planned following the receipt of a serious diagnosis for Tracey’s mum, Kathleen.

On Sunday night, September 13 last Tracey asked Kathleen if there was anything particular she would like to do and she replied: “To see you walk up the aisle”.

When the local community heard of this wish, they rowed in behind the Flynn family and, within less than a week, helped to put all of the necessary arrangements in place to make the dream come true.

Local residents of all ages erected marquees, cleaned the estate, painted houses, hung balloons, planted flowers and mowed the grass.

Two locals prepared the meal for the wedding party of 24 while local venues and suppliers were on hand to provide everything from a wedding cake and decorations to cutlery, tables and chairs.

There was even a red carpet outside the bride’s home as she emerged on her big day wearing a wedding dress that was delivered with 24 hours to spare, having been ordered just five days earlier.

It turned out to be a magical day for all involved.

The guests were blown away by the community’s support but there was nobody more grateful than Kathleen for the way her neighbours and friends came together to ensure she got to see her daughter walk down the aisle.
