Politics has often been labelled a blood sport and Mayo County Council may have found its very own coliseum!

Members of  the local authority look set to host a meeting at the world’s largest sports air dome in Bekan.

At yesterday’s monthly meeting in the TF Royal Theatre in Castlebar, Independent Cllr Christy Hyland suggested that the council consult with the GAA about holding a meeting of the local authority at the Connacht Centre of Excellence in the near future.

Cllr John Cribbin, who is from the nearby town of Ballyhaunis, said he believed the facility would be capable of holding such an event, and was willing to liaise with Connacht Council secretary John Prenty to arrange it.

“I would like to congratulate John Prenty and the entire Connacht Council. It is a magnificent structure and has great potential to really put Bekan and the surrounding areas on the map,” said Cllr Cribbin.

Mayo County Council has not met in its chamber at Aras an Chontae in Castlebar since last March due to the restrictions around social distancing. Instead, councillors have met in a number of locations, including the Castlebar campus of GMIT and, more recently, the Royal Theatre.
