It is still all to play for in the group of death in the Mayo Senior Football Championship as Breaffy picked up an excellent win over Castlebar Mitchels at Josie Munnelly Park this afternoon. Aidan O’Shea was a standout performer for Breaffy in the game, guiding them to victory although they trailed at the halfway point. Rob Hennelly also played a crucial role in the game, putting on an exhibition of free-taking in the latter stages to see Breaffy over the line against their local rivals.

The result means that a win for Breaffy against Charlestown in two weeks will see them through to the next round. Should Castlebar fail to beat Westport in Round 3 however, that will open the door for Charlestown to qualify should they beat Breaffy. A win would see either Castlebar or Westport advance into the next round.

Elsewhere, the Neale had to chase the game to get a draw away to Belmullet despite holding a five-point lead ten minutes into the second half. Goals from Joni Donoghue and Eamon McAndrew gave the north Mayo outfit a massive boost but the Neale clawed back to come away with a point. The result has consigned Garrymore to elimination and they will now have to do battle with Belmullet to avoid the relegation playoffs. The Neale will take on Ballaghadeerreen in two weeks.

Meanwhile, both Ballina Stephenites and Knockmore secured passage into the quarter-finals with wins on the road against Claremorris and Kiltane respectively. The north Mayo rivals will now face off to determine the winner of the group while Claremorris and Kiltane will face off to decide who is guaranteed to remain at Senior level next year.
