Westport Quay is a popular stopping point for camper vans and motorhomes.

A Westport councillor has raised the issue of waste from portable toilets being thrown into the sea in the town.

Cllr Brendan Mulroy is calling for some restrictions on access to The Point at the Quay in Westport, which is a very popular local bathing area.

“99 per cent of people who visit Westport and West Mayo are the best of people. The issue that has come to my attention over the weekend is people throwing raw sewerage from their portable toilets into the Point at the Quay in Westport.

“These people park up and stay overnight. Again, not everyone does this but for those that do, shame on you. Kids and adults swim in this area every day. It is one of the busiest and most beautiful areas of Westport all year round.”

Cllr Mulroy said he will be talking to Mayo Co Council to restrict access to the Point so locals and visitors can enjoy the area “without having to look at idiots” who engage in this behaviour.
