The courthouse at The Mall, Castlebar.

A man fled from custody today after his case was heard at Castlebar Courthouse.

The Lithuanian national had failed to appear when his case was listed at Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court yesterday (Wednesday). The case was due to be given a trial date. Judge Rory MacCabe issued a bench warrant for the arrest of the accused man.

Gardai arrested the defendant and brought him before the court this morning. The state objected to bail for the accused man on the grounds that he had breached previous bail conditions.

Refusing a bail application by legal representatives of the man, Judge MacCabe adjourned the case to October 5 next and remanded him in custody.

Shouting at the court that there was ‘no way I am going to jail’, he ran from the courtroom, pushing a garda who stood in his way onto a bench. A number of gardai and prison staff pursued the man and he was detained in the lobby of the courthouse.
