Mayo Co Council has been allocated funding of €95,000 towards a feasibility study into a proposed 60km greenway link from Westport to Ballina.
The funding was confirmed today by Minister for Climate Change, Communications Networks and Transport, Mr Eamon Ryan as part of an overall €4.5m fund for greenway projects around the country.
The money has been provided from the 2020 Carbon Tax Fund and will provide support for feasibility, planning and design for greenways around the country.
The proposed Mayo Interurban Greenway will connect Westport and Ballina via Castlebar.
Local FG TD Alan Dillon says the proposed development will play an important role in supporting local communities to create jobs and bring visitors to the county.
“As we have seen over the course of the lockdown, people are eager to get out into nature and avail of the stunning scenery in our country.
“Our local greenway will encourage tourism in the future, and will also provide a safe, segregated space for people walking and cycling,” Deputy Dillon concluded.
